Impacts of Decreased Physical Activity in the Last Decade

Emily Min February 11, 2024

In an increasingly sedentary society, the decline in physical activity levels in the past decade poses significant challenges to public health and well-being. Physical activity trends have been monitored and assessed to show whether we hit our national goals regarding physical activity. The Center For Disease Control and Prevention states that adults must get at least 150-minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week, a standard held much higher when compared to the recommended activity times of the 1900s. Despite the increased availability of workout routines, gyms, and equipment, our overall physical activity has declined compared to previous years.

Many data sources and statistical models consistently demonstrate a decline in physical activity, attributing it to a significant increase in food intake, as reported by the National Library of Medicine. Over the past decade, there has been a notable shift in eating habits in America. Excessive food consumption stands out as a primary factor contributing to the reduction in physical activity and the surge in obesity rates across the United States. Despite leisure time activity durations holding relatively steady in recent years, the imbalance created by increased food intake has fueled an epidemic of obesity.

The evolution of technology has become integral to facilitating our daily activities, even extending to the point where it performs physical tasks on our behalf. Instead of walking to places, we use trains, cars and other types of transportations to do our daily activities.. While technology also inspires us to adopt healthier lifestyles, emulating the examples portrayed on social media, a significant portion of the population remains influenced by the allure of abundant food consumption and a less health-conscious way of life.  Our lifestyles have changed as technology evolves.

Our physical activity has gone low over the years, what can we do to better ourselves and find a healthier lifestyle?

Our daily activities include much more physical activity than we think. Trying to add activities into your daily routine can help you improve your lifestyle; instead of driving, walk whenever and wherever you can. Various physical activities contribute to a healthier lifestyle, including aerobic exercises such as walking, running, swimming, and cycling. For others, perhaps activities like strength training and yoga fit their lifestyle. In order to embark on a journey towards a healthier lifestyle, it is necessary to prioritize regular exercise and keep a balanced nutrition.

Why is it important to have some activity and good eating habits?

Regular exercise can improve your health much more than you think. It can help with brain health, managing weight, strengthen your bones and muscles, and help the ability to do everyday activities. Exercise also helps with mental health; children as young as six have improved thinking and cognition abilities and shortened the feeling of anxiety. Eating patterns  also play an important role when it comes to managing weight and health risks. Simply changing eating habits and adding physical activity into your life may benefit you in the long run.
