Beyond the Tank: Exploring the Unique Perspective of the Aquarium of the Pacific

Michelle Fan February 12, 2024

The Aquarium of the Pacific (AOTP), much like any other aquarium, serves as a showcase for aquatic life. However, it distinguishes itself by using this platform to generate funding for supporting, researching, and conserving marine life and ecosystems, while also providing an engaging and educational experience for its visitors.

General Information

Situated at 100 Aquarium Way, Long Beach, CA 90802, the AOTP finds its place along the coastline, near attractions such as the Queen Mary. Adults can purchase tickets for general admission at $44.95, available online or at the aquarium itself.

Contents

Boasting a wide variety of marine exhibits, the AOTP showcases species from different oceans worldwide ranging from stingrays, bioluminescent jellyfish, king crabs, and aquatic plants. Beyond mere observation, the aquarium provides numerous interactive experiences that can appeal to all but children in particular. From touching stingrays and feeding Lorikeets to embarking on a two-hour whale-watching cruise, there’s something at the AOTP for every visitor.

Ethics

The ethics of displaying wildlife for entertainment often raises questions: Is it morally acceptable to remove animals from their natural habitats? I would say that The Aquarium of the Pacific operates with ethical considerations in mind, being transparent about how its earnings support the research and preservation of marine species. It offers visitors to donate to directly fund the protection of certain endangered species like Sea Otters.

Conservation

It’s not everyday that you hear an aquarium tell you to eat more fish. The AOTP takes this unique stance to encourage conservation efforts against climate change. By highlighting issues like coral reef bleaching and the displacement of polar bears due to rising temperatures, the aquarium presents an innovative solution. Since a significant portion of daily carbon emissions comes from consuming red meat and processed foods, they promote a diet richer in seafood. This not only helps reduce emissions but also offers health benefits that can improve both personal wellbeing and the planet’s health.

My Experience

My visit to the Aquarium of the Pacific with my sister was filled with memorable moments, but one stands out in particular. Observing dolphins freely roaming the sea during our whale-watching cruise was a breathtaking experience. It highlighted the social nature of these creatures and it was truly a marvel of nature. I also noted that in stark contrast to other facilities that house large marine animals like dolphins and orcas in confined spaces, the AOTP chose to protect these species over profit and entertainment. Knowing my visit supported an organization dedicated to the welfare of marine life, filled me with warmth and a desire to return in the future.
